What does each ingredient do?

John Sanford chose each ingredient for a reason. Here is a plain-language look at each one. These are general descriptions of what the ingredients are and how they’re used in sports nutrition, not claims that Race Fuel treats or prevents anything.

  • Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) is made from L-carnitine in the body. L-carnitine and ALC are involved in how the body turns fat into energy and help move fatty acids into the cell’s energy centers.
  • Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub from Asia and Africa. It’s widely used as an adaptogen, a plant that’s traditionally used to help the body handle physical and mental stress. Some studies have looked at it in connection with stress hormones and muscle recovery.
  • BCAAs (valine, isoleucine and L-leucine) are branched-chain amino acids. They’re essential, which means the body can’t make them and they have to come from food or supplements. They make up a large share of the protein in muscle, and athletes use them to support muscle recovery and endurance.
  • HMB (beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate) is a compound the body makes naturally from leucine. In exercise studies it’s been looked at for its role in muscle recovery and resistance to fatigue.
  • MCT oil is made from medium-chain triglycerides, a type of fat that the body takes in quickly and can use as a ready energy source. It lets the body lean less on carbs for fuel.
  • CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a group of fatty acids found in meat and dairy. It’s been studied for its role in body composition and lean muscle.
  • L-glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and is widely used by athletes in recovery routines.

Together they work like spokes in a wheel. They do similar jobs in different ways. John’s view, from decades of training and racing, is that the blend supports recovery and endurance when it’s paired with good training.

How does Race Fuel work?

Race Fuel is built to be used after exercise. After a workout your body takes in nutrients more efficiently, and that’s when the ingredients have the most to work with. Race Fuel is not a stimulant, so it doesn’t work by giving you a buzz. It’s there to support your recovery between workouts and races. It does not replace proper nutrition, training, water or sleep. John also reminds riders to hydrate and use electrolytes when needed.

How do I take Race Fuel?

The label says to take one scoop once a day as a workout supplement. Mix it with 8 to 12 oz of water. Use it within an hour after exercise. You can also mix it with protein powder, creatine, electrolytes, juice, a smoothie or almond milk. John’s own favorite is chocolate protein, and the powder blends well with almond milk. It can be used for weight training, cycling, swimming or your favorite demanding sport. If you have a sensitive stomach, start with half a scoop. Race Fuel can also be taken in the morning with breakfast, but it works best after a workout.

How long does one pouch last?

One pouch has 30 servings, so at one serving a day it lasts about 30 days. Race Fuel is something you keep taking, more like a daily vitamin than a one-time energy drink. It blends well with creatine and protein powder, so you can add it to your usual post-workout shake.

Who is Race Fuel for?

Race Fuel is for anyone who works hard or plays hard, in the gym or out of it. It was developed with motocross and endurance riders in mind. That includes:

  • Motocross, dirt bike and off-road racers
